Colour In July

In 2013 I followed the late Geoff Hamilton's advice and visited a garden centre or nursery each month of the year with a view to buying a plant in flower. This should ensure that there's something flowering in my garden every month of the year.

Lewisia - Special Mix was the plant I chose for July. The pretty pink flowers were the thing which attracted me to this plant which I'd never heard of before. I planted it in my border and it gave a lovely show of flowers again last year. In hindsight, I'd have been better planting it on a tilt in a container as these plants don't like moisture at the crown as it encourages them to rot. As you can see, it isn't doing so well this year and isn't providing any colour at the moment. It's a tiny specimen, much smaller than it was when I bought it.

I'm not going to give up on it. I think the best course of action now will be to dig it up and pop it in to a pot where I can nurture it back to health. Let's hope I haven't left it too late.

  1. Such a shame this plant isn't doing too well, and pink flowers are so lovely to look at. I think your idea of digging it up and putting it in a pot where you can nurture it back to health is a good one. Let us know how things go.

    All the best Jan.

    1. At least I've still got a chance of having it survive, many of my monthly plant purchases didn't make it so I feel like I've got a second chance with this one.

  2. The centre looks OK so I think your plan has a chance but if the pot is outside remember to tilt it.

    1. I don't think it's rotting, it just isn't very happy at the moment. I shall try my best with it.

  4. It's a very pretty plant but does not like wet winters, does best planted into an alpine container with lots of gravel, I have tried to grow it with little success.

    1. It put on a lovely show last year and looked to be thriving in my border but I shall definitely have to take it out and nurture it back to health, it doesn't look very happy at all at the moment.

As you know what's wrong and can remedy it you may well revive this plant. Fingers crossed. Flighty xx

  6. Lewisia.......beautiful plant but one I have failed with miserably. It just seems not too like my garden.
I hope you have better luck with your plant Jo. They are worth the effort.

    1. It did and it certainly looks as though it wants to live. I think putting it in a pot is the way to go.

  8. I'm sure putting it into a pot will nurse it back to health.

    1. I think so too. I don't think it will survive another winter if I don't do something before then.
