A Foray Into Fungi

I couldn't resist picking up one of these mushroom kits when I visited the pound shop.

I've always fancied having a go at growing my own and at just a pound, these kits are affordable and it won't matter if it's not successful.

The kit comes with spawned mushroom compost, instructions and growing medium. It all looks simple enough, only time will tell whether it really is easy to grow mushrooms or not. I'll let you know.

  5. The key to success is having the right place to grow them. Most houses are too hot. I tried one of those kits once, and it was "OK". It did produce some mushrooms, but to be honest it wasn't an economical venture since the white mushrooms are very cheap to buy - but at only £1 I might think differently! (as long as you don't put too high a price on your own time).

    1. It's just a bit of fun. I don't think I'll be growing mushrooms for profit.

  6. We once grew them in a bag in the garage. One thing that stick in my mind was the need to keep picking or you ended up with one huge mushroom.

  7. A great way to start out in mushroom growing. Once you've perfected the ordinary ones you can branch out into the fancy ones. It would be lovely to be able to grow some different varieties. I assume once you have them if you leave some unpicked they will produce more. I'll be interested to know how it goes.

    1. I don't have very high hopes as I don't have the first idea about growing mushrooms, but it's worth a try for a pound. I'll follow the instructions and see how I go.

  9. That kit will be fun to have a go at growing mushrooms. Hubs was looking at a kit in the garden nursery centre and I made a mental note to get one so that one of the grandchildren could give it to him for Christmas. I might go to the pound shop and get a box. Thanks for the mention.

    1. It's got to be worth a go for a pound, even if nothing comes of it. I'm sure the ones in the garden centre will have cost a lot more.

  13. I would love to see how you get on with these. I like the idea of growing mushrooms but normally the expense puts me off, but for £1 I might be tempted to give it a go xxx

  15. That's a great price isn't it? I was gifted to mushroom growing kits last year, they grew really well but didn't grow a second or third time, they were delicious and such fun to watch growing so you will enjoy the process. Good luck with it.xxx
