Introducing Sammy

You were introduced to my son's rabbit, Monty, in May in my post Coming..... Ready Or Not. This is Monty's brother, Sammy, my daughter's rabbit. When we went to buy the rabbits in February of 2008 Sammy was the smallest there, my how he's grown. He's now much bigger than Monty. They're Rex rabbits, quite a large breed, and they tend to have a fold of skin underneath their neck. Monty doesn't have such a pronounced fold under his chin, but Sammy does earning him the nickname Big Fat Sammy Double Chin. During the summer they have their hutches on the grass so that we can just open the hutch doors to enable them to come and go into their run as they please, but in winter their hutches are brought down onto the patio as the grass tends to get so waterlogged. We still give them access to their runs in dry weather, but in wet weather they are spoilt and brought into the house for some cuddles instead. With all the rain we have had lately we decided that now was the time for their hutches to be moved so they are now installed nearer the kitchen door than usual. This also means that they get spoken to everytime someone goes in or out of the house.

There hasn't been any gardening done lately, the rain has just been too bad. It's also got alot colder which means that the plants which were moved into the greenhouse will soon be getting covered in their winter blanket of fleece.

The potatoes which I'm growing in a container in the greenhouse, hopefully for Christmas dinner, seem to be doing ok still. I hope I'm not disappointed on Christmas day.

  3. Hi Jo, I feel very guilty not visiting all my favourite blogs (yours is one of them!)But here I am. I love that rabbit, it's so cute. I see on your previous post that you read my two favourite magazines, although I have said the Dec issue of 'Grow your Own' will be my last as it's two years now and like someone else said on your comments they do repeat themselves, so I will just buy it occasionally next year.
I haven't got around to passing on my award yet, but I will during the week. Thanks for the comment on my blog and I have left a reply.
I hope you had a good week-end (apart from the weather !!) take care. M x

  4. Sammy is going to be thoroughly spoiled I can see!!
No gardening here either - and we're in for a really cold snap I hear.

Snuggle up to Sammy and keep warm!

  5. We had a rabbit when I was younger - they smell pretty bad, as I remember. We had to keep him outside. At the end, we decided to give him away.

  6. Jo, thanks so much for commenting on my blue post. The blue glory flower is one of my favorites. Your bunny is so cute. I used to have them. They are so soft and cuddly.

  7. My Beagles would have big chubby sammy for lunch!! Next door bought one from Selby auction and it went native and escaped and lived on their windfall apples. seemed like quite a blissfull life, although the amount of foxes round here may have made it slightly stressful!
(struggling to post comments on your blog at moment - I am illegal!!!)

  8. Sammy is just gorgeous...i used to have a netherland dwarf and lion-head rabbit but they have both passed on now and I am now so busy i didn't feel I had the time to give to new rabbits.

I will keep my fingers crossed for your christmas potatoes..i intended to do this but was so late in taking down my peppers I didn't have the room...maybe next year...post some pics so we can see how they're doing!!

  9. The bunnies are adorable. They probably desearve to be spoiled. Hope your winter is going well. We are wet here too right now, but probably not as wet as you.
    Stay warm and dry,
    Kat

  10. You're welcome, Mary Delle. Yes, Sammy is cute, although very large.

Thanks, Anna. Yes, it's now cold enough for the fleece. After a mild start to autumn it's certainly got alot colder lately.

Don't feel guilty, Maureen. Of course I'm pleased to see you when you do visit, but we all have our busy 'real' lives too. I've also just cancelled my subscription to Grow Your Own as I can't seem to keep up with two magazines every month. I buy the Gardener's World subscription with my Tesco vouchers, so it cuts the cost down dramatically.

Sammy is thoroughly spoilt already, Jeanne. They are lovely animals though and I feel they get neglected being outside all winter, hence the cuddles on the sofa.

That's a shame, Vrtlarica. Rabbits make such lovely pets and certainly don't smell if they're cleaned out regularly. Some people have them as house pets as they can be trained to use a litter tray.

Hmmm, no doubt at all that your Beagles would have Sammy for lunch, Cat. My dad always says that he'd look good in a pot! Sorry that you're having problems posting comments, I can't think why that would be, perhaps if anyone has any ideas I might be able to do something to rectify it.

Thanks, Tanya. I think it's worse in winter when you're not in the garden so much, they could get a little neglected if you didn't make the effort with them. Any pet is a commitment. My potatoes seem to be doing ok, I hope I'm not in for a disappointment at Christmas.

Sorry to hear that you've got rain too, Kat. I don't mind the cold as much as the rain, there's not much gardening to be done when it's wet.

  11. Wow! Rabbits and potatoes! I don't have neither one. A dog and half-frozen mint - this is what I have. I won't tell my boys that rabbits can be trained to use a litter tray! Then, they will beg me to get a rabbit! Stay warm and thank you for your comment on my blog!

  13. That is quite a bunny! And it's OK outside during the winter? What is the hutch made of? Is it insulated? Cheers!

  14. I think your dog might worry a rabbit, Tatyana. Well, that's what you can tell your boys anyway.

You're welcome, Jeanne. I hope you had a lovely birthday and enjoyed your trip to Norfolk.

The hutch is made from wood, Avis, but it is fitted with a hutch snuggle, one of these http://www.petsathome.com/shop/hutch-snuggle-for-sherwood-cottage-and-thistle-hall-by-scratch-and-newton-16022 and on top of that we lay carpet to keep them extra snug.

  19. We did have a white Christmas, Tatyana, and we're still getting the snow here.

We did have snow on the 18th December, Linda, and we have it again now. More is expected to fall during the rest of the week too.

Thank you, Jeanne. I hope you had a good Christmas too.

Rex rabbits are gorgeous, Re. Their coat is so velvety.

  21. Thanks, Bangchik. Lots of children in the UK have rabbits as pets, I don't know if this is the case in Malaysia.
