Relocation Relocation

Each winter, we move the bunny's  hutches down from the grass on to the patio. It's a little more sheltered for them, and they're closer to the house which makes things easier when we're cleaning them out or feeding them. Even though the weather's still very mild, we decided, as the clocks had gone back last weekend, that it was now time to relocate them.

They each have a run which attaches to the hutch so during the summer, they usually have access to the grass. Even though they're now on the patio, we still attach the runs on nice days so that they can scamper outside their hutches, and they're also given a good run around on the grass too when it isn't too wet. Here's Monty having a bit of freedom during the summer.

Monty is Daniel's rabbit but as he's now away at university, his care has fallen to us. He's a really mischievous bunny and is very nosey.

Eleanor's rabbit is called Sammy. He's more reserved than Monty and quite shy.

I'm hoping that the weather stays mild for a while longer so that they can continue to have some good runs on the grass before it becomes too waterlogged. They do enjoy having a run around.

    1. Well they do say it's all about the location, and the bunnies do seem to like it here.

  2. Wonderful, I do love rabbits. They look so healthy, you clearly look after them very well. Our guinea pig still goes out on the grass every day when it's dry enough, even in the winter, although not for too long. But it's just nice to have a change of scenery and some fresh grass and exercise. She lives inside from October to April otherwise.

    1. We do try our best to give them happy, healthy lives. We even have them innoculated, I know many people don't bother with rabbits, but I think if we're going to have pets then we need to treat them well. It's nice for them, like your guinea pig, to have a change of scenery and a run around, but our grass gets so waterlogged in the winter that it's impossible for them most of the time, but we do still let them run around the patio if the grass is out of bounds.

    1. They do have their own little characters, they're so funny to watch sometimes. They do love running around on the grass so I hope the good weather continues so they can carry on getting some exercise.

  4. When we were kids, my brother and I had a rabbit each. My most abiding memory is the palaver we had every evening when it was time to round them up and put them in their hutches for the night. They saw this as a game of hide-and-seek I think. It certainly took ages!

    1. I know exactly where you're coming from. Sammy is ok, he'll happily take himself home and hop back in his hutch but Monty is just like you describe, running all over the place until we manage to catch him. Like I say, he's such a mischievous bunny.

    1. They both love laying out and soaking up the sun, though they're happy to sit inside their hutches in the shade when it's too warm.

  7. It is such a joy to read the love and attention you give your rabbits. They look healthy and happy.

Sadly so many are neglected and are not given the proper lifestyle they deserve.

Great to see two very happy bunnies :)

    1. Animals are such a big commitment and ownership shouldn't be taken lightly. Rabbits can live to quite an age so we understood when we got them that Daniel and Eleanor would more than likely have left home whilst we still had them. Sadly, too many people take on animals without much thought and they end up living such sad lives.

  10. You have very happy-looking rabbits! We haven't had a killing frost yet which is amazing, but quite a bit of rain. We've started feeding my mini horse and goat in their stall instead of the paddock. It's that time of year -- where does the time go ... P. x

    1. It doesn't seem two minutes since we were moving the rabbits back on to the grass in spring, yet here we are moving them back on to the patio again. We haven't had a frost yet either, nor much rain.

    1. They love all the attention they get on the patio as everyone talks to them as they're passing. They're very pampered bunnies.

  12. Oh they both look happy and healthy creatures Jo. Do you cover the hutches in really cold weather or do they come indoors as temporary residents?

    1. The hutches are covered with, what looks like a space age, hutch hugger. They're silver and bubbled and are supposed to keep the hutches cosy in winter and cool in summer. There's also a screen which comes down over the front of the hutch to keep flies out in summer and draughts out in winter, and we cover the fronts with old carpet on a night. We make sure that they have plenty of hay too, so they're lovely and snug.

  13. What adorable wee critters, they have the life of luxury with you....who could ask for more!I wish all rabbits were taken such good care of, they are the most abused pet in Britain, so many buy them for children and totally neglect them. xxx

    1. It's such a shame that so many people take on pets without giving any thought to the care they need. Rabbits are such lovely animals, a perfect pet, they don't take much looking after so it's a shame that so many people buy them and then neglect them. It must be a terrible life for them being shut up in a cage all the time.

  14. Bless them Like you we have ended up taking care of two bunnies and they are both lovely characters. Ours need to be insulated now ready for this cold snap we may be getting.

    1. Rabbits are such lovely animals, but they can live to a ripe old age so people should be made aware of that fact when they take them on as children grow up and leave home and the rabbits are still needing to be cared for. Our hutches have hutch huggers for insulation, and we cover them with an old carpet at night to keep the draughts out.

  15. It looks as though they have very nice homes and I am sure that you will all appreciate them being close to the house over the winter. xx

    1. Their hutches are quite roomy, but we add the run on to the bottom so that they can hop about outside, and we always let them have a good run around the garden too so that they can really stretch their legs. They do enjoy being close to the house as everyone has a chat with them as they're passing by.

    1. They're rexes. Their fur is really soft, it's velvety to the touch.

  17. It is lovely to see photos of them enjoying their freedom. I hate it when they are kept cooped up in small hutches, without the chance to really stretch out and enjoy doing what rabbits naturally do in the wild.

    1. I totally agree. We bought the biggest hutches we could so that they can move around in them. I thought one with two storeys would be good so that they get a bit of exercise hopping between the two floors, but they do need to be able to hop around on the grass as often as possible so that they can really stretch their legs. They do love their freedom.
