A Rose By Any Other Name

My Golden Wings rose which Mick bought for me last Christmas is still blooming, it's so pretty and delicate looking and it smells beautiful too.

I want another rose for my garden to plant in front of a six foot fence. At first I thought I should get a climber or a rambler but now I'm thinking they might be too vigorous for what I want and a large shrub rose might be the better option. I love single flowers but could go with semi double and I'm veering towards a deep pink, though I could be swayed on this.

I love American Pillar but this, I'm sure, would be too rampant and I also like Rosa Rugosa but wonder if this could be too. Do any of you grow either of these varieties?

I'd love to know if any of you have any suggestions as to a variety which may be suitable as I don't know the first thing about roses so any help will be greatly appreciated.

  1. I have a Rosa rugosa 'Alba' hedge and I love it. Rosa rugosa does have a bad reputation and although the plants in my hedge do wander around a bit, I find them easy enough to rip out. Have you been to the Peter Beales website? It makes selecting roses very easy - just click on the pink section and away you go! I grow Rose Ball, Souvenir de St Anne's and Alida Lovett and they are lovely. They may be too pale for your requirements though. Don't you love the bare root season?

    1. I think if I had a little more room I would definitely go with Rosa Rugosa, it looks a gorgeous rose. I'm sure the white variety is stunning. I have been to the Peter Beales website, I think I'm a little dazed after searching through all the different varieties. I've looked at the roses you grow, I like Rose Ball very much, such a gorgeous shade of pink. I'm hoping to get a variety I like sorted out so that I can put it on my Christmas wish list, how fortunate that the big day falls within the bare root season.

  2. What a co-incidence - my blog post today is almost exactly the same subject!

    1. That is a coincidence, though I know we're both in the market for a new rose. I hope we can both find what we want.

  3. 'Golden Wings' is a beauty Jo and isn't great to have roses in flower at this time of year. I don't grow either of the roses you are considering so can't offer any advice. If you have not already done so it's worth having a good look at the David Austin and Peter Beales websites as they both offer suggestions for specific purposes. Have fun choosing :)

    1. I love my Golden Wings rose, it was exactly what I wanted. It's only new but has flowered all year and is still going strong, so lovely, as you say, to have roses blooming at this time of year. I have looked at both websites you mention, and many more besides. I'm going a little bog eyed now looking at all the different varieties.

  4. We grow rosa rugosa at the coast in sandy soil where it thrives. We love it and it smells nice but it is a bit of a thug although it doesn't mind being cut back hard and it's not too good as a cut flower.

    1. Thank you for the information. It's good to have some feedback from someone who actually grows this rose. I think I'll leave this variety until I have more space for it otherwise I'll be forever cutting it back, which won't do at all, it's such a beautiful rose that it deserves to be able to spread itself about.

    1. Yellow roses remind me of my sister, they were her favourites and I'm very partial to them myself.

    1. There's just so much to choose from. I suppose it helps that I know, roughly, what I want, but still, the choice is vast.

    1. I do love my Golden Wings rose. I'm a latecomer to roses, they're not something I've ever grown before, but I'm liking them more and more as time goes by.

  9. Your rose is very lovely. Ours have just about given up now. I don't think I know enough about roses to advise you on what you should get.

    1. These blooms have opened out since I took this photo, they're so pretty. I don't know the first thing about roses, I've only recently started growing them but I've fallen in love with them. I just wish I had more room so that I could grow more.

    1. I love how pale a yellow this rose is, it's so delicate looking. I wasn't expecting blooms this late in the year so it's a real bonus.

  11. That's a lovely rose which is on my list.
I see that others have already suggested looking at the David Austin and Peter Beale websites.
Good luck with choosing one! Flighty xx

    1. I'm so pleased with this rose, it's performed well this year and was exactly what I was looking for. I think I may have found a rose I'm happy with, though I'm still looking at the moment, there's just so many to choose from.

  12. I prefer the single flowers too. There's far too many to pick from for me to make a decision. That's not much help at all is it.

    1. I like the simplicity of the single flowers, plus they're more wildlife friendly too. I've found that I'm very picky when it comes to roses, there's lots that I don't like, but plenty that I do as well so it's very hard to make a choice.

  13. 'A Shropshire Lad' is a good one. We've got one growing up against a fence. It needs a certain amount of training and pruning but doesn't get too big and is fairly easy going. It's a healthy rose too.

    1. It's a lovely colour but I'm after something a bit more simple, either a single or semi double. There's such a wide variety of roses that there's sure to be exactly what I'm looking for.
