Heaven Scent

I often buy hyacinths at this time of the year, they're a perfect alternative to air freshners as their scent is heavenly. I know there are many people who aren't very keen on their fragrance, but I love it.

I was in Leeds for a little while yesterday afternoon after dropping Eleanor off for her matinee performance of Scrooge at the Carriageworks Theatre, so I popped in to the market with the sole purpose of picking up these beauties. You can't go wrong for £2.50.

I'm just waiting for them to bloom now, I wonder how long it will take them.

    1. Me too. Their perfume literally fills the house when they're in bloom.

  2. I love the scent - haven't seen any for sale around here yet though. Doesn't look as though they'll take long to bloom. Enjoy!

    1. I'm sure they'll be blooming soon, they're already budding up nicely.

  3. I've not been to Leeds for years. Last time was on a course at one of the hotels. Do you know what colour they will be? My guess is blue which may just be my favourite hyacinth colour.

    1. I don't visit Leeds very often, only really when I have a reason to go such as yesterday. The hyacinth is labelled as blue, but there's a picture of a lilac one so I'm not totally sure. It's the pinks which I'm not so keen on so blue or lilac would be lovely.

  4. I love them too, I always used to grow them when I was little. £2.50 is brilliant value, I shall look out for some.

    1. I've never grown hyacinths myself, I always buy them like this when they're ready to bloom.

  5. For years I could not be in the same room as these bulbs, I would come out in a huge nasty rash, these days they are treated so I can enjoy them

    1. I've never heard of them causing rashes before, I wonder what they're treated with which prevents it happening now. Glad you get to enjoy them, they're one of my favourite things at this time of year.

  6. My little pot of hyacinths is similar to yours. They should be white when they bloom.

    1. I don't think I've ever had white ones, I shall have to look out for some when I buy my next lot.

  7. Somehow I cannot get my head - or nose! - around hyacinths, but I wish that I could because as you say they are such great value and very pretty to look at. It is the fragrance that doesn't agree with me for some reason though. I hope that you enjoy yours and I will enjoy seeing everyone else's flowers! xx

    1. I think they're a love or hate thing, the scent is so powerful that there's no inbetween.

  8. I can imagine them fully open and can almost smell them already, Jo. They will be lovely in full bloom. P. x

  9. I regret not growing hyacinths this year as I usually do some for our daughters and daughter-in-law for Christmas. I think it's because we went to Italy and got out of routine. We did plant lots of bulbs before we went away and some are already blooming in the covered yard! Your hyacinths look as if they're well on their way to bursting forth very soon and will bring a lot of pleasure and well worth what you paid for them. I think I'll be going to the town market to see what I can find!

    1. I've never grown hyacinths myself, I always buy them like this when they're nearly in bloom. The covered yard must provide some shelter for your bulbs if they're blooming already, I hope you've still got more to come to welcome spring in.

    1. I love the air being filled by the scent of hyacinths, it seems to waft right through the house, just lovely. Eleanor's been involved with a youth theatre company for many years now, she loves it, especially when she gets a singing part as she has this year.

  11. I love the scent of hyacinths but have a keen sense of smell. So, I grow them outside.
I would, to be truthful, find them too overpowering inside. Glad you are able to enjoy them though and yes that was a bargain.

Poppi is in the Wizard of Oz.......I shall be a proud Grand parent on Thursday watching the performance.
Hope all goes well for Eleanor.

    1. My sense of smell is quite weak, perhaps that's why I love hyacinths so much, their fragrance is so strong that I can actually enjoy it. Good luck to Poppi, I love The Wizard of Oz. Eleanor was in a school production of it quite a few years ago.

    1. I passed some more when I went to the shops this morning and I was sorely tempted to reach for my purse but I managed to resist. I'm sure that more will find there way in to the house once these have finished flowering.

  13. I love the fragrance too, but it can be quite overpowering. I gave some hyaciths to my mother for her office a few years ago, and she had to move them away because the fragrance was giving a her a headache.

    1. They do have a very stong scent so I can understand it being too much for some people. I can't get enough of it though, I love it.

  16. I usually buy a bowl or two of hyacinths Jo. I like to have them coming into flower early in the new year. I used to plant them up myself but it seems to be just as cheap to buy them ready planted these days. Enjoy the splash of colour and the perfume :)

    1. They're definitely as cheap to buy ready planted. I've always bought them this way rather than growing them myself.
