A Windfall

This is the second lot of apples our lovely next door neighbours have given us this year. They've got a few apple trees in their garden and they say they had a bumper crop this year.

I found these waiting for me on the doorstep before they went away on holiday a fortnight ago, it's time I did something with them. Apple Crumble sounds good.

I'm hoping that my own little apple trees will give me a better harvest next year.

  1. A windfall like that is always welcome. It's just the weather for apple crumble and custard. Flighty xx

    1. I'm not a lover of custard but the apple crumble will be most welcome.

  2. Our own sapling Red Falstaff M27 that was bought in a pot and planted out in May had five good sized apples that developed and they're juicy and a nice flavour. They seem to keep well, although they were soon eaten this time! The bags of apples we made into apple pies and then stored are also good keepers. I don't know what variety. I shall have to ask DinL. I'm sure your gift of apples will make some welcome Apple Crumbles. Hope your little apple trees do better next year.

    1. Glad to hear that your new apple tree made a good start this year. I think my trees will do better in the ground than in pots so that's the plan.

  3. How lovely to find so many apples on your doorstep......what kind neighbours you have.

I have used all the apples from our old apple tree.
I eat a couple of apples every day....and use the rest for cooking. Consequently they don't last long :)

    Enjoy your crumble.

    1. It's a lovely surprise to find fresh produce on the doorstep. It was pears that they had a glut of last year so we were only too happy to take some off their hands.

  5. Ha! I'm jealous now. My own apple tree has been such a flop that I dug it up a few weeks ago. I have a friend who often gives me a load of Bramleys, but her crop was very poor this year so I only got a few apples.

    1. It's such a shame about your tree, I hope you give it another go as it's lovely to have your own supply. I love Bramleys to cook with. It's funny how trees seem to have off years where they don't produce so much fruit. I'm sure you enjoyed the few apples you were gifted.

  6. Mmm, can't beat apple crumble. They look like really good apples as well. My new little trees should be delivered any day. I'll have to venture down to the allotment to plant them then.

    1. I love swapping produce, there's usually something you've got lots of which a friend doesn't and vice versa. It's nice to think that my own little trees will be as productive one day.

  13. How wonderful! Our usual place for picking apples yielded none this year so we are feeling rather bereft :(
