It All Begins Here

This is the first entry on my blog. I thought it would be a good idea to start a blog as I have just taken on an allotment, so this will chart my progress.

My name has been on the allotment waiting list for 20 months and on the 21st March 2009 I was finally handed the key. My name had been on the list for four possible sites and I had originally wanted one of the other three, but after taking a look at this site I decided to take it.

My allotment is on a small site with only five other plots. Although it isn't totally overgrown, there is plenty of weeding, clearing and digging to do. The previous plot holder has very kindly left me a wheelbarrow, two compost bins and four water butts which will come in very handy indeed as there is no water supply on the site.

I hope that you will follow my allotment progress with me through this blog.

  3. Thanks for your comments.

Now that I have a blog I will hopefully record more of my gardening efforts with pictures, something I haven't done before.

Also, I intend to blog about my garden as well as my allotment so there will be other things to see for anyone without an allotment or interest in an allotment.

  4. Congrats on the new plot! It looks in decent nick considering how overgrown some plots can be when you first get them.
Just remember to dig a bit, plant a bit, dig a bit more etc rather than spend all your time digging. It'll feel much more satisfying once you've got a few things in the ground. :)

  8. Thanks everyone.

Yes, I was surprised when I got the plot as I was expecting something totally overgrown with brambles. Most sites do seem to let them get too overgrown before they pass them on to the next plot holder.

Nice to hear from you Ruth. Hope everything is going ok?

  12. Hello fellow allotmenter! Thanks for comenting on my blog, you're the very first! Hope you're getting the better of the weeds and have your beds ready for planting soon. I've got five beds ready now and just about keeping on top of the weeds. Only got a few things out there so far but there's plenty ready to be planted out soon.

  13. I'm exactly the same. I've got a few beds ready for planting, and so far have only got my potatoes and strawberries in, but I've got lots in the greenhouse which will be ready for going out soon.

It will be interesting to follow each other's progress, especially as we don't live too far away from each other.
