Waiting In The Wings

The rose which Mick bought me for Christmas has been waiting to be planted out, and we finally got round to the task at the weekend. I'd seen a photo of Golden Wings on Sue's Our Plot At Green Lane Allotments blog and I fell in love with it. I love yellow roses, the simpler the better, and this one has single blooms so fits the bill perfectly.

It's a shrub rose and will grow quite large, 42 inch x 54 inch according to the label. As I had no space in my border for a plant of this size, there was only one thing for it, a patch of grass had to be dug up. I've been pondering making a border along the side of the lawn in order to grow plants which will hide the fence, so the decision has really been made for me, there was nowhere else suitable for my rose to be planted. I shall stack the turf, grass side down, and it will soon rot down and be usable on the veg beds at the allotment. I'm contemplating planting my patio apple trees along the fence here too.

I gave it a good water in and it looked happy enough in its new spot. I'm hoping that it does well as I'm looking forward to seeing the beautiful blooms.

Archie's such a nosey little dog, no sooner had the rose been planted did he have to go and investigate.

I think it meets with his approval.

  1. Your cavalier is darling....I have owned eight in my lifetime and loved each and every one of them.
Nella, the terrier is a new to me breed .....it has been a huge learning curve after owning Cavs :)

A beautiful rose.....yes the simpler the better.

It is hard work taking up turf, well done.
Great to have that space for plants though :)

    1. I had dogs as a child, (Labrador Cross and Springer Spaniel), but Archie is our first family dog. I would have loved a dog years ago but I worked and didn't think it fair to leave a dog all day, so we got a cat instead. When I gave up work, I did a lot of research on different breeds, I'd never had anything to do with Cavaliers before, but it sounded the perfect breed to get as a family dog, and I was right. They're such fabulous little dogs, so loving and perfect company. I should imagine that Nella isn't as laid back as a Cavalier, Terriers always seem to want to be on the go. Very cute though. I shall have a good think about what else I want to plant in my new border, I don't want to rush it, I want plants which are going to be there for some time so I want to get it right.

    1. He's such a nosey little dog, it would serve him right if one of those sharp thorns pricked his snout. Glad to hear that the parcel arrived and that you like it.

    1. I love the single blooms, they're just so understated and beautiful. It is a scented rose but I haven't smelt it yet, something else to look forward to along with the flowers. I shall most certainly do a post once it starts blooming.

    2. I has a good scent, Ours are planted along the edge of the plot and people passing by comment on the rosy perfume from this and one or two others growing by it.

  6. That's a pretty rose which will give you pleasure when it blooms. The rose with yellow blooms, Arthur Bell, that my husband chose last year for our wedding anniversary has just been planted in the front garden after being in a pot because it was difficult to know where to put it permanently. You'll enjoy deciding what to plant along side your rose by the fence.

    1. I remember buying an Arthur Bell rose a few years ago from the bargain section of a DIY store. I was hoping to nurse it back to health but it was beyond hope and never did much for me, which was a shame. It's nice to have another border to plan, though I'm going to take my time and enjoy the process.

    1. I'm pleased to say he didn't. He'd need to watch his nether regions if he did, there's some very sharp thorns on the rose, it doesn't bare thinking about.

  8. I hope it settles in for you, it is such a pretty colour. I would love Mike to buy me a rose bush, I think I will drop some hints for my birthday. Mind you I will have to remind him when my birthday actually is.

    1. I love the colour of this rose, I've been looking for something similar to this for a long time. I put this rose on my Christmas list, though I didn't really expect that Mick would buy it for me so it was quite a surprise on Christmas morning.

  9. It looks like a lovely rose, no doubt it will do really well in it's new spot. And now you have a lovely new border to fill. I've got apple trees along my fence as well, facing east. They do quite well there. Your doggie is absolutely adorable, you've done a good job of selling that breed, I'd get one if I could! My littlest boy would absolutely explode with delight if we got a dog. My other half isn't keen though.

    1. I'm really coming round to the idea of planting my apple trees in my new border, I think I have just a few too many in pots now. Cavaliers are such a lovely breed of dog, I can wholeheartedly recommend them. Eleanor nagged for a dog for such a long time, I didn't think it was fair to get one while I was still working, but I soon relented when I gave up work and I'm so glad I did, I wouldn't be without him now. Dogs aren't for everyone though, they're very tying and you have to consider them if you want to go out. There's many days out we can't have anymore because dogs aren't allowed, but we just find something else to do instead.
