A Bargain Fig

I've mentioned Morrisons plants before, saying how reasonable they are. This little fig tree is my latest acquisition.

I've fancied having a go at growing a fig tree for a while now, I think they're attractive plants and will look lovely in the garden, but I'd also like to have a go at getting some fruit from it too. This is Brown Turkey, a variety recommended for growing in the UK. It looks a nice, healthy specimen, and although it's only small, it's got more growth than some which were for sale, there were a couple with just a twig stuck out of the plant pot.

Fig trees are ideal for growing in containers as they like to have their roots restricted. If they're planted out, they will make vigorous growth at the expense of a good crop of fruit.

At just £2, I'm sure you'd agree that I couldn't leave it on the shelf. It may have some growing to do but I don't mind waiting.

    1. I've had a few things from Morrisons and they've always done well for me. It's definitely worth a gamble for £2.

  2. I'm a fan of Morrisons plants, my standard bays were 2 for £40 last year and have lots of heathy new growth

    1. That's a great price for your bays, I think I shall have to look out and see if they're selling them again this year.

  3. I paid a fortune years ago for a fig tree and then it died one winter. The Mozzers plants have always done well for me and I especially love the yellow label, reduced clematis ;)

    1. What a shame your fig tree died. I shall make sure that I move mine in to the greenhouse over winter and give it some protection. I've never seen any yellow label, reduced clematis in Morrisons, that's something to watch out for.

  4. Blimey that looks like a bargain! Happy figging. :) And, thanks for the recommendation - I'll be looking in Morrisons once we move!

    2. I just checked out a similar sized plant at my (only) and local garden centre £4,99.

Do Morrisons have them around normally for a bit - I may send a chum off in search :) Thanks!

I miss and I'm sure many other folks miss Woolies for plants and especially fruit trees.

    3. Even £4.99 is cheaper than I've seen them in some places. I haven't seen figs in Morrisons before, but I've seen similarly packaged gooseberries and raspberries, and lots of ornamentals too, and they usually have them in for a while at this time of year. I hope you manage to find one. I miss Woolies for lots of things, I'm often thinking of a place where I could buy such and such a thing and then think, Woolies would have had it.

  7. I grow this fig and it cost a fair bit more than £2. Time I went shopping for another one - churlish not to at that price.

    1. I couldn't believe it was only £2, not after the price I've seen them for in garden centres. I know it's only small but I'm happy to wait for it to grow. I hope you manage to find one in your local Morrisons.

  8. Wow good price indeed and looking very healthy. We have an established fig tree in the garden, goodness knows how many years it been here but it is huge, we try to prune it back a bit but it has a mind of its own.

    1. I've read that figs can grow very big, another reason for keeping it in a pot. I was surprised to find this at such a great price, it was straight in my trolley.

  9. I don't like figs, but that's a real bargain at that price. I hope that it does well for you. Flighty xx

  10. Oh dear... fig is a fruit plant on my list to be planted in my garden this year. I have been checking some online nursery to get a suitable variety and reasonable price. I hope I can find it soon.

  11. Ah, you're a woman after my own heart, Jo! I'm forever buying Morrison's twigs and have had an excellent success rate. My last year's purchase was a red gooseberry and it's doing fantastically well this year. Ditto the Jonker van Tets redcurrant which fruited in its second year. I'm definitely keeping my eyes peeled for a fig now next time I go shopping! At £2 a twig, it's worth taking a chance!

    1. Glad to hear that your twigs are doing well. I've seen various kinds of berries before but never a fig, I thought this was a bargain. I do hope you manage to find one yourself.

  12. Great buy. I have a friend who now picks figs from her garden. I am sure given time your little plant will crop.
I know that supermarket and they do some jolly good offers with plants :)

    1. It would be lovely if I were eventually picking figs from this little tree, a while off yet I would have thought, but I don't mind waiting. I've bought plants from Morrisons before and I've been pleased with them, they even have some good offers in their gardening section.

  13. What a bargain. We don't have Morissons around here, probably just as well really else I'd be tempted regularly with those prices :-)

    1. Morrisons isn't out nearest supermarket, in fact, I think all the other supermarkets are nearer to us, and we don't shop there all the time, but I do find that they have some good bargains when we do shop there.

  14. I have seen those fig plants in Morrisons myself but havent really got anywhere to put one. I would love to try and grow one as I have heard they are quite easy to.

  17. We used to have a very big fig tree but had to move it and it didn't survive the move, however we now have a smaller one that we have had a few years and the fruit crop is getting bigger every year. It was a very good price I hope it grows well for you, happy growing.

    1. That's such a shame that it didn't survive the move. It's good to hear that you're getting some fruit from your new tree, I think it will be some time before I get anything from this little twig, but it will be exciting if it does go on to produce.

  18. We have an enormous fig growing near our back door, and I put its vigour down to the fact that we empty the ash can next to it! We started emptying the ash there one particularly bad winter - crossing the garden wearing slippers in the snow is no joke - but the fig tree seems to have enjoyed its ash mulch and we get pounds of figs from it.

  20. Another bargain, Jo! I'm sure you'll enjoy your fig tree especially when it produces some fruit. Our fig tree in the back garden was planted when we moved in about six years ago. We have another in the front garden that was transferred from a pot and is not so big, but still doing well because it gets a lot of sun where it is. We started getting mature fruit about two years ago. There are two crops a year but the second lot don't mature in our climate.

    1. One thing about growing this in a container is that I'll be able to move it around so that it gets plenty of sun. I'm sure I'll have a few years to wait until I get any fruit, but I don't mind waiting.

  24. I recently visited Morrisons to get some always lovely fruit and veg and the first thing I came to as I entered the shop was the plant stall. They had two Tayberry plants left and I picked the shorter, bushier one because as far as I'm concerned with fruit its a marathon not a sprint. £2 is a bargain and about the only berry I didn't have in my collection. Thrilled with my already thriving purchase!

    1. I'm pleased to hear that you managed to pick up a bargain in Morrisons too. I've already got a tayberry, though it's still waiting to be planted out on the plot, I'm not sure where I want it to go yet so it will be kept in its container until I've decided. I got a few fruits off it last year.
