Monthly Plants 2013

This year, I took the late Geoff Hamilton's advice and purchased a plant each month which was in flower for my garden. I hoped that by doing this, I would have something blooming in my garden every month of the year.

I thought I'd list the plants I chose, firstly so I've got a record all in one place, but also to give other people an idea of plants which will be flowering in any particular month.

January - Cyclamen
February - Primrose
March - Pulmonaria Angustifolia Blaues Meer
April - Arabis Spring Charm
May - Aquilegia Vulgaris Clementine Purple
June - Scabiosa Columbaria Barocca
July - Lewisia Special Mix
August - Liriope Royal Purple
September - Dianthus Sunflor Charmy
October - Salvia Nemorosa Ostfriesland
November - Sedum Spectabile Brilliant
December - Hellebore

I'm pleased with the plants I've chosen throughout the year, they've added more variety in to the garden as well as plenty of colour.

As you can see from the photo, the cyclamen which I bought last January have survived and are ready to burst in to flower again ready for January 2014 so my plan is really working.

I've enjoyed visiting a nursery each month and choosing which plant to buy. It's definitely worth doing if you want year round colour in the garden.

    1. I've enjoyed choosing a new plant for the garden each month, I've come across plants I didn't know whilst doing this so it's broadened my knowledge too.

  2. It's nice when a plan comes together well, isn't it? so now your garden will be full of colour all year round... Are you going to keep this routine going, and do it for 2014 as well?

    1. Well my plan seems to be working so far, I just hope the rest of the plants burst in to flower when expected too. I'm not going to continue this in to 2014 as I'm running out of room now, oh to have a bigger garden.

    1. I don't have room for many more plants. I have plans to dig another border though so you never know.

  5. You have a nice choice of plants, the problem is of course to restrict yourself to just one plant a month! It is important to have something in bloom all year round. Well done.

    1. He was a very wise man. I just hope that all the plants I bought come full circle. I'm glad to see the cyclamen ready to bloom again though, there was a little doubt when I bought them.

  7. Thanks for the list Jo. It's interesting to see the early ones as I joined in part way through. The most rewarding bit is seeing your new acquisitions coming back stronger the following year.

    1. It really is. I'm hoping that they all do as well, especially as there was a little doubt as to whether the cyclamen would weather the winter weather or not. That's me done now that I've done twelve months but I shall look forward to seeing what you buy for the early months of the year.

    1. It was fun to visit the nursery without a plant in mind to buy and just look for what was in flower. It got harder in the winter months though.

  10. What a great idea! I may give it a go, I hope you don't mind me using your list? I'm not too hot on flowers but hate a bare garden this time of year! X!

    1. I can't take credit for the idea, that was all down to Geoff Hamilton. The cyclamen are looking good for January so I hope the rest do just as well.

    1. I'm looking forward to seeing if they all behave as they should. I'm not going to continue with this in 2014, I just don't have the room for more new plants.
