Miss Vain

Last autumn when I was choosing which crocus to grow this year, I came across Miss Vain. I didn't read the packet they came in, I just went by the photo where the blooms looked cream and I thought they were pretty. It wasn't until I got home and read up on the variety that I discovered Miss Vain is in fact a white crocus.

It was actually a happy accident picking up a white variety as I do like white flowers and these have been spectacular.

I bought two packets, twenty bulbs in total, for the total sum of £2.00. What a bargain.

They were planted in a shallow terracotta pot and they've made such a pretty display.

I have no hesitation in recommending Miss Vain if you're after a white crocus, I shall definitely purchase this variety again myself.

  1. The photo does look cream. I am planning on buying a white crocus for the blue and white bed so this will be a contender - is it large flowered?

    1. The photo certainly doesn't make them look as brilliant white as they actually are. They don't produce large flowers, they're actually fairly small.

    2. Sue 'Joan of Arc' is a large flowering crocus that I grow, and really like. Flighty xx

    3. Joan of Arc may be more suitable as it's a perfect white whereas Miss Vain has a yellow throat, which I actually like.

  6. They are gorgeous - I planted a bunch of bulbs including crocus at my first house, but have yet to get to it at our current place. I'm looking forward to getting to that stage in our plans.

  7. My "white" Crocuses have been good too. In fact I think it has been a very good year for Crocuses all round. It is never possible to rely too much on marketing photos on products like bulbs. I find they are often completely wrong!

    1. These crocuses have put on a wonderful display and the ones I have planted in the ground have done well too. I thought I was buying a cream variety but I'm not unhappy with white, they're absolutely beautiful.

  9. They are most pretty indeed Jo and it's fortunate that you liked them. The photo on the packet is most misleading.

    1. I'm quite partial to daffodils too but crocuses will do whilst I wait for the daffodils to bloom.

  12. Just love it when you happen across a happy accident and a bargain to boot. Back in the day, I bought some crocus bulbs from Woolworths and they've bloomed year after year for more than 25 years.

    1. I do miss Woolworths, you could pick up some real bargains in there, though we've got Wilkinson's now which is very similar I suppose. I've got tulips and daffodils in my garden which were here before we moved in, twenty one years ago. Some plants just seem to go on and on.

I grow a white species tulip.......small and neat. I have them protected this year to stop rabbit damage, so hopefully I will be able to share them on my blog.

    Lovely Spring images.
