It Grew

Do you remember two of my previous posts, A Foray Into Fungi and Zilch, where I told you about a mushroom kit I'd bought in the pound shop? I'd done exactly as instructed on the box, yet not a single mushroom grew.

Not one to give up, I brought the container out of the dark and left it uncovered on the kitchen windowsill. This is what's popped up.

There's one decent sized mushroom and you might just be able to see another tiny one behind it. It certainly won't make a risotto, it won't even cover a slice of bread for mushrooms on toast, but at least I got a mushroom to grow.

The kit only cost £1 so I think I'll definitely give it another go if I see one again in the pound shop, it's not a huge outlay but it's fun trying to get something to grow.

    1. It says in the instructions that you're meant to leave it in the dark, it obviously had other ideas and wanted a bit of daylight. It would be lovely if the others followed suit but I don't think it's going to happen.

  6. That is very much like what I got when I tried one of the kits. I think they must be quite fussy in regard to temperature, humidity, light etc.

    1. I think you're right, though it's funny how this mushroom grew in the light when they're supposed to grow in the dark.

  10. Good job! Here ' the mushroom kit' is a 'box' that made from composted rice stem, and the spora have spread on it. We only spray the 'box' to keep them humid and the mushrooms grow well.

  12. Excellent, you got one! It's always fun to try something new isn't it. A friend of mine put spent mushroom compost under her hedge and got a huge row of mushrooms. Maybe there will be more to come. CJ xx

    1. It makes it all worthwhile now that at least one has grown. I've heard of spent mushroom compost being used and then crops of mushrooms growing in it before, you can't beat free food.

  14. You really aren't one to give up easily are you, Jo? Great that you photographed and posted about it, as it deserves recognition -- I would want it framed. P. x

  15. How exciting Jo. I bet that you are glad that you had not given up on them completely and thrown the contents of the kit on the compost heap. I'm wondering whether the diddy one has grown any bigger since you took that photo :)

    1. I thought it was worth giving them time, I'm glad I did. The tiny one hasn't grown any more, nor have any more mushrooms appeared, but at least I got one in the end.

    1. I have to confess that it hasn't been eaten, hardly worth turning the hob on for one little mushroom.
