Garden Visiting In July - Part Two

I Beg Your Pardon
I Never Promised You A Rose Garden.

Actually, I did. This post follows on from Part One of my garden visit to Temple Newsam Walled Rose Garden.

I've never really been a lover of roses but my tastes are changing, I've now got three rose bushes in my own garden, Golden Wings, a golden yellow shrub rose, The Birthday Rose, a half standard creamy coloured rose with a slight pink tinge and an unnamed red rose which Daniel bought for me for Mother's Day last year.

I thought I'd show you a few of the roses in Temple Newsam Walled Garden. I couldn't see any labels giving their names which is a shame, it would have been nice to know which varieties they are.

I think my favourite is the first yellow one, I have a thing for yellow roses, especially delicately coloured ones. Do you have a favourite?

  1. I was never much of a rose fan either Jo, but they have slowly made their way into my garden and now I can't get enough of them!

I would have to say the coral coloured rose in the photo four from the bottom would be my favourite from this selection. What a shame the variety is unknown.

    1. It's funny how our tastes change, isn't it? I'm already looking out for another for my garden. I wonder if the staff have a list of the varieties growing in the garden, there wasn't anyone around when I visited but I'll have to look out for someone when I'm next there.

  2. I love the preaching coloured ones, but only if they have a strong scent! All roses should be scented in my opinion!

    1. The scent in the rose garden was amazing, in fact I commented up on it at the time. I agree that roses should definitely be scented.

  3. I don't have roses personally but my Mum has always grown them, I remember as children getting into trouble when we used to pick the blooms to make perfume!!

    1. My mum used to have roses in her garden and I did exactly the same thing, pulled all the petals off the blooms to make perfume. Ha ha.

    2. I think we all stole the petals to make perfume, a childs joy.

    3. I don't know why we did it as it never smelt like perfume, it just turned in to a slushy mess.

  4. I Love yellow roses, and have a couple of yellow bushes in my garden. I fell out of love with roses for years, but now they are back in the garden.

    1. I don't know what it is about yellow roses, I just love them. I'm sure some more roses will creep in to my garden, I don't think I'm done with them yet.

  5. I love roses, but in my garden they seem to be very prone to Black Spot, and they don't do very well. Call me an old romantic if you like, but I think red ones are best. Might be something to do with the fact that my wife comes from Lancashire - the Red Rose county!

    1. My roses have some blackspot but it doesn't seem to be affecting them too badly at the moment. Thinking along those lines, I should have a liking for white roses coming from Yorkshire.

I've always liked roses, probably because they were mum's favourites so she grew lots of them. I like white ones, and I'm still thinking about a yellow one with your Golden Wings top of the list. Flighty xx

    1. Golden Wings is really lovely and has a beautiful scent. I've had an aversion to pink roses but I'm coming round to them now and love the one in the above photos.

  7. Love number 6, very pretty and delicate. Really love the scented ones, never been keen on white ones though xcx

    1. It's funny, I'm not keen on peach ones at all. I do love roses to be scented though and I like some white ones but not all.

I do love a red rose

  9. I love roses, but don't seem to be the best at growing them! I love to see pictures of them though, and I really enjoyed these. xx

    1. I think most people like roses, there's just so many different kinds that there's something for everyone.

  10. Like you, I'm a recent convert to roses. Aren't these beautiful, I especially like the violet one, how very unusual.I bet they all had a lovely fragrance.xxx

    1. It's funny how we all have different tastes, I'm not keen on the violet one at all. The scent was really beautiful, one of the best things about roses.

  11. Like you Jo, I love the first rose.....there is a fragility about pale lemon roses that appeals to me.

I also like whites, especially single blooms............

    1. All of these roses are a little fussy for me, like you, I love single blooms. I'm taking more and more of a liking to pink roses, I just can't make up my mind if I like pale ones or bright ones. My next door neighbour has a fabulous climber, well, perhaps it's a rambler as it covers the whole of her fence, and that's a really bright pink, it's wonderful.

  12. The yellow and the white are my favourites I think, but they're all stunning. I've got a couple in the garden and a couple at the allotment, they're always wonderful when they flower.

    1. I'd like to have more flowers at the allotment, perhaps a rose is the way to go. It would give a lovely scent whilst I'm working there.

  13. I do hate it when gardens don't name or leave old labels from a previous plant to totally mislead you. We are on the lookout for climbing roses at the moment.

    1. I wonder whether they aren't labelled because the names have been lost over so many years, it would be interesting to find out. I'm wondering about a climber for my own garden, I want something which will cover the fence.

    2. Maybe a rambler then?

    3. Yes, possibly. I might not go for a rose at all, I may go for something else, I need to do some more research yet.

  14. The Penny lane rose for three reasons..........

I saw it once on a gardening programme and the next day I saw it at a gardening centre (fate)

I planted it at my old house and I still miss it.

    I can remember it's name!

  15. From the ones you are sharing with us Jo numbers 2 & 3 are my favourites colour wise. A shame that there were no labels. My favourite rose of all is rosa rubiginosa aka the sweetbriar with its stewed apple scented foliage.

    1. I'm not keen on number 3 at all, I just don't think it looks like a very natural colour. I'm not very knowledgeable about roses at all so I had to look up your favourite, I can see why it's your favourite, I love the understated blooms and such a pretty colour. The scent sounds fabulous.

  16. Roses are very difficult to grow in this climate, Jo, but I do love them. Like you, I prefer pale yellow roses. I enjoyed walking through the rose garden with you. P. x

  17. I do so love roses and in this garden, they are all pretty pathetic bar one. My last garden had a lot that I'd planted myself and a few others that were there when we moved in. I think your second rose is Iceberg and the third looks a lot like Blueberry Hill. I also love the singles and had one called Dainty Bess which is a pretty pink with deep purply coloured stamens. Take care.

    1. The thing with roses is that there's just so many varieties, there's something for everyone's tastes. I'd like to get another for my garden, perhaps a climber or rambler next.

  19. I love Roses but have none in my garden, my neighbour grows them in her front garden that is probably about as close as they will get to mine. I am hopeless at growing anything that flowers. A beautiful post :)
