Living Rabbit Food

You may remember, last year when I was purchasing seeds in The Garden Centre Group sale, I came across a seed mixture especially for rabbits. Having two pet rabbits ourselves, I decided to have a go at growing it.

On the back of the packet, it says: "A mixture of seeds for sowing as living pet food which has been specially formulated to supplement the diet and suit the natural and nutritional needs of rabbits. The seeds can be sown in containers or in the ground and the rabbit can eat the plants directly or they can be harvested, washed and dried before being given to eat".

I decided to sow the seed in to seed trays. There looked to be lots of different seed included in the mix, however, once it had grown, all I could see was what looked like clover.

Monty didn't seem to mind, he enjoyed his snack very much.

So did Sammy. He made short work of his treat.

You can see how much they enjoyed it, it was nibbled right down to the soil.

I've grown more than a dozen of these quarter size seed trays full of living rabbit food from the one packet of seed, so Monty and Sammy have enjoyed lots of extra treats. There's food available for guinea pigs, hamsters, budgies, dogs, cats and more in the same range. I shall definitely be looking out for the rabbit variety again as my two bunnies seemed to love it.

  1. Have you kept the nibbled trays to see whether anything either regrows or comes up later?

    1. I did keep them, they've only just gone in the compost. Nothing regrew, I think the bunnies made so much of a meal of them that they didn't stand a chance to recover.

  2. How does the price compare with a pack of Clover seeds?

    1. I don't know what the full price of these seeds are as I bought them in the sale at just 50p per pack, so I can't complain at that.

That looks to be a really good idea, and you've certainly done well with them so far. Flighty xx

    1. The bunnies thought it was a cracking idea, they've really enjoyed their treats and as I sowed the trays successionally, they've still got a couple each left to munch.

  4. What beautiful rabbits. I used to have pet rabbits years ago, snowy and patch (the children chose their names )
I think that is a fantastic idea, wish it had been around when I had mine.

I won't be growing it for the rabbits in my garden :) Ha!

    1. The rabbits look a bit scruffy in these photos, they'd just started to moult, and moult they do. They're Rex rabbits and they have such dense fur, it takes some getting rid of in spring. It sounds like you're growing plenty for the rabbits in your garden already.

  6. Thats a cleaver idea and it looks like they definitely liked it to. What with the rabbits, cat and chucks we get through a fair amount of feed and greens, thankfully the allotment helps with this.

    1. I can imagine that the chucks will eat lots, and I know that rabbits do. It's a good job you've got an allotment to keep them well fed.

    1. I'll definitely buy them again if I see them in the sale, Monty and Sammy loved it. I never know what I can and can't feed them, though I pick dandelion leaves for them because I know they love them.

  9. I was interested in the Italian labelling, Jo! Lovely Monty and Sammy certainly enjoyed their snacks. Perhaps the clover grew quicker than the other seeds and took over? However, the clover produced young and tender leaves for that extra tasty treat.

    1. I think the clover must be a bit of a thug chasing everything else out. I don't really mind, just as long as Sammy and Monty enjoyed their treats, and they did.

It's lovely to see them having such a treat, when I chop veg for the rabbits in the rescue, they squeal away, they just love fresh food. I recently grew catnip for Curly cat, she absolutely loves the stuff.xxx
