Photo Medley - August

I can't believe how fast this year's going. In meteorological terms, it will be autumn on Tuesday. I prefer to follow astronomical dates though, so for me, autumn won't start until the 23rd of September, still time for us to have a bit of summer. Time now then, as August comes to a close, for my round up of photos which haven't yet made it on to the blog this month.

Here's one from our holiday at the beginning of the month, Dalby Forest. It's such a beautiful place to walk and Archie loves it here too.

A few more photos from our visit to Wentworth Garden Centre Gardens where the bees were enjoying the flowers just as much as we were.

I think borders look fantastic when they're set against a wall for a backdrop.

The trees were underplanted with hostas giving this area a woodland effect.

This is the bee house which Mick attached to the fence for me a couple of years ago. It's never had any residents and I was going to move it a couple of months ago to see if a change of location would attract some visitors but before I got the chance, something moved in. Can you see that one of the little holes has been blocked up? I hope this will encourage some friends to follow suit.

Daniel bought me this red rose for Mother's Day a couple of years ago. It hasn't done very much until this year when it's put on a lovely show.

I always take far too many photos for my Harlow Carr post each month so here's a few more which I took this month. We had a brass band playing to us whilst we wandered the gardens.

These large pots greet us as we walk through the door, they display different flowers every month so I look forward to seeing the new arrangement on each visit.

I've never grown ferns myself but I find them fascinating, quite prehistoric in their look and the way they unfurl their fronds.

Many plants are setting seed at this time of year, I expect there'll be more seed pods to see on my next visit as we head in to autumn.

The cornflowers are in the Kitchen Garden. There's a wide variety of flowers grown there amongst the vegetables which, I'm sure, must help attract the pollinators.

Crocosmia Lucifer. A fabulous flower for a hot border.

It's a bank holiday weekend here so fingers crossed for some good weather. Mick has taken next week off work so I'm hoping we can get out and about a bit. Have a great weekend everyone, whatever you're up to.

  1. Yay! Another 23 days of summer. I think I'll go with that date too. It's been a very poor summer down here, I'm fervently hoping that September will make up for it. Have a great week.

    1. It's been a poor summer here too, and I had such high hopes. It would be lovely if we had an Indian summer this year to make up for it, wouldn't it?

    1. I know, I'd almost given up hope. I'm hoping there'll be more takers now that someone's made the first move.

    1. It hasn't been the best month weather wise, perhaps September may be better. Take Tivvy with you, she'd love it, though some of the walks may be a bit long for her little legs.

    1. Dalby Forest is brilliant, your boys would love it there, especially the Go Ape adventure park. I'm hoping that now one bee has moved in to the hotel, more will follow, we'lll see. Thank you, I'm hoping for some good weather next week but I'm not holding my breath.

  5. Oh, how exciting about your bee house - congrats!! I saw a similar version in a home I recently toured on a local "urban farm tour" day that was completely homemade. I haven't blogged about that day yet - there has just been too much to do this summer!! - but I'll have to look back at the photos to see how they did it. And that cornflower is beautiful - I've only ever seen them in their blue version.

    1. I've been saying for ages that I'll make a bug hotel myself but it's something I still haven't got round to. There's so many flowers in the Kitchen Garden at Harlow Carr, I think it's lovely when flowers are mixed in with vegetables.

    1. I always had so many extra photos at the end of each month which hadn't been used, I like to get them on to the blog in this way.

  7. I have been denying the coming of autumn, and now all of a sudden it seems to be upon us doesn't it! Scary huh. I will be denying it until much later in September - or perhaps even holding off until October! After all that way surely it will hold winter at bay for longer too!! xx

    1. I like your reasoning. I'm a summer girl myself so I don't admit to Autumn until winter's nearly here.

  8. A lovely collection of photos, Jo. Our weather here is definitely Autumny. We hardly seem to have had any proper Summer. In the mornings now my garden is full of cobwebs and dew / raindrops. Photogenic, but...

    1. There's been no proper summer here either, it's been a bit of a washout this year. I'm definitely hoping for better things next year.

  9. Summer just didn't really get going this year, the plants are still playing catch up, flowers flowering at least three weeks later than they should have, lets hope we have a good September.

    1. I think some plants just haven't bothered this year, my cucumbers, for example, have never recovered from the cold spring. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that September's good.

Thanks, you too and have a good week as well.

    1. I'm a big fan of crocosmia, I know it can be a bit of a thug but there's nothing else that has such an impact in a hot border.

  12. What a lovely set of pics! Dalby Forest looks simply heavenly, I must go there one day!
I too love a walled garden, everything does look lovely growing against rustic walls. How wonderful to see you finally have tenants, it gives me hope for mine which are still totally empty!xxx

    1. You'd love Dalby Forest, and so would Sam and Annie. Don't give up on your bee house, it's taken quite some time for the residents to find mine but they do in the end.

  14. I also go with the equinox Jo so I'm still living in hope of some decent summer weather :) The weather has obviously suited that red rose though and you must have been so pleased to see it flourish this year. Hasn't the year flown?

    1. The weather wasn't so good yesterday but we've had a bit of sunshine in between the clouds today so I'm not complaining. I'm so pleased my red rose has done well this year, I don't like it when I receive a gift and it doesn't do as it should. The year has flown. I'm not sure if it feels that way just because I'm getting older, a scary thought.
