A Wonderful Surprise

There's nothing more exciting than picking the mail up off the doormat to find a package with a handwritten address when you're not expecting anything. This happened to me yesterday. I had no idea what it could be, I haven't ordered anything lately and I wasn't waiting for anything to be delivered. I was most surprised by the contents.

Cheryl from Take Time To Smell The Flowers...... had written a post about Auricula and I'd commented that though I loved auriculas, I'd never grown them. I'm not sure why I've never acquired any plants as I always linger at any stands which sell them when I visit any garden fairs or garden shows. Cheryl has been kind enough to start my collection off for me. She's divided her plants and sent me three little plantlets to start me off. They've got some great roots on them.

They were wrapped in moist kitchen paper and sealed in a plastic bag to keep them in good condition in the post and I have to say that they arrived in remarkable condition. I didn't want to put them under any stress at this end so I got them potted up straight away.

I shall grow them on and then set about finding some nice terracotta pots for them, I think they look fabulous when grown in vintage ones, I just hope I can find some. If you haven't yet discovered Cheryl's lovely blog I suggest you hotfoot it over there, you won't be disappointed. Tell her that I sent you. Her garden is absolutely beautiful, testament to the work and time she's put in to it over the years.

Thank you, Cheryl, you made my day.

  6. I found some wonderful vintage pots in a salvage yard.
They had stacks of them and at 50p each were an absolute bargain.

Hope the auricula are successful. I find they are very forgiving :)

Your post and words are too kind but thank you xx

    1. A salvage yard is a good place to look for pots, I shall have to have a trip there. You got some real bargains. I'm really looking forward to seeing how the plants do, I've just been out to the greenhouse to check they're ok and they look fine, none the worse for their trip in the post. Thank you again.

    1. I'm still surprised at how well the plants held up in the post, they're lovely and sturdy still, though Cheryl had made sure that they didn't dry out at all, they'd been well looked after. I hope you enjoy Cheryl's blog, she gardens with wildlife in mind so I'm sure her posts will be right up your street.

    1. I've always been fascinated by auriculas, not sure why but they really appeal to me. Cheryl says these should be lilacs and purples so I'm looking forward to seeing them when they eventually bloom.

  13. I love (good!) surprises, especially when they relate to the garden. It will be wonderful to see those little plants take root and grow - I much prefer purchasing small little plants and watching them grow than getting larger ones .

    1. I agree, I like to see a tiny plant grow in to something big and strong too. I'm really looking forward to seeing how these do, they do seem very sturdy so far so I'm hoping I can't do much harm to them.
