Photo Medley - February

Here's the latest batch of photos which haven't made it on to the blog before now for one reason or another. Actually, they're ones which have been left over from previous blog posts as I haven't really been out with my camera this month, it's been far too cold.

More photos from our trip to RSPB Fairburn Ings. Goldfinches and sparrows having a good feed.

A robin waiting for titbits.

One of the pheasants doing a good job of keeping the ground free of seeds.

This bird is on the gate post at the entrance to the walled garden at Thornes Park. Is it a heron?

Outside the walled garden are these beautiful dogwoods, they're at their best at this time of year.

A teasel and dogwood display at Harlow Carr.

A stream in the gardens.

My camera really hasn't been worked much again this month but I'm sure I'll have more photos to share in my photo medleys as the weather warms up and I'm out and about more.

  1. Nice Photos! The English Goldfinches are gorgeous in color; our finches are just sort of brown, or purplish. The American Goldfinch is a quite striking yellow with black markings above nose and on wings. Hopefully this cold weather will pass soon and cameras can start clicking! (by the way, I received book Yorkshire Shepherdess and will start reading today :) )

    1. Thank you. I love goldfinches, we get lots of them in the garden, the niger seed I put out attracts them. I hope you enjoy The Yorkshire Shepherdess, I certainly did.

    1. Thank you. I would have done better with my other lens but I didn't bother changing it as my fingers were so cold.

  3. Fab photos! I love the way pheasants are vacuum cleaners. I saw one hoovering up in the chicken coop this morning!

    1. Thank you. I get wood pigeons, collared doves, robins and blackbirds feeding from the ground in my own garden but I've never seen a pheasant there yet. I could do with one with the amount of spilt seed.

  4. Lovely photos Jo, I could do with a pheasant to clear up under my bird table!

    1. Thank you. Me too, the other birds have a good go but I'm sure a pheasant would make short work of it.

  5. I only have pigeons clearing up under my bird feeders, I'd much rather have a pheasant!

    1. Thank you. We like it at Fairburn Ings, though your stomping ground sounds fabulous, I'd love to visit Slimbridge.

    2. Did you see the duck with the top knot. If you visit the top album on our photo portfolio on my blog side bar there is a photo of it,

    3. I didn't see it, but then we didn't wander any further than the garden feeders. I shall pop across and have a look at your blog.

  8. I love those bird pics, especially of the sparrows. I wish I had a pheasant who hoovered up the seeds, mine grow everywhere!
    I can't believe how cold it's become....and here's me thinking winter was on it's least legs....it really is 'orrible isn't it...xxx

    1. I don't think sparrows and starlings get the credit they deserve, they're often seen as dull, brown birds but they're beautifully marked and not as common as they once were. It's been really windy here today, my worst kind of weather, it scares me to death.

  11. I always find it quite difficult to get good bird photos and yours have turned out really well. Suppose I will keep trying.

    1. Thank you. It's through luck more than anything else though as I always struggle to get decent photos of birds.

  12. If you need any Blackbirds, let me know. I have a surplus of them! Good news on the bird front for me: it looks as if a pair of Tits may have decided to nest in the nesting-box I constructed the other day. They are certainly showing a lot of interest in it.

    1. We had blackbirds nest in our hedge one year. I was hoping they'd return but I think there's too many cats around for them to feel safe. That's brilliant news about your nest box, especially so soon after putting it up. I've had one up for quite a few years but the birds have never taken an interest in it. It's recently fallen apart so i've just bought a new one to try again.

  13. Images to treasure and look back on Jo. It has been a rather cold month for taking photos. My hands can't cope with fiddling about with camera controls when they are chilly. It's also been quite windy too which hasn't helped matters. Most of mine this month have been taken under cover :)

    1. I think it's the wind which makes it so cold, it's been really windy here over the last couple of days. I'm hoping that March might be a little warmer so that I can get out and about a bit more.

  16. I love all birds but I have a particular fondness for the smaller birds. They are just so fascinating to watch and have such beautiful colours. I have a little robin who follows me around the allotment. Great pictures xxx

    1. I think the smaller birds are my favourites too. There was always a robin following us around on our last plot but we haven't yet made friends with one on the new plot.

  18. What a grand idea to purchase a plant to bloom each month. I love your photos, especially the birds and marvel a their plumage. Our sparrows are plain looking and even our robins look different.

    1. It certainly keeps the garden looking colourful when there's something blooming the whole year round. I think sparrows can look rather plain until you take a closer look, the same with starlings, but they're actually very beautiful.
