Veg Box

One of the things I love most about growing my own fruit and vegetables is sharing the produce with friends and family. This is the veg box that I took for my mum and dad earlier on this week.

There isn't huge amounts of anything, but enough for my mum and dad to get a few meals from.

The first pickings from the blueberry bushes, Maskotka tomatoes, the only ones ripening in any number at the moment, and the only two ripe plums there were on the tree at the time.

Crystal Lemon and Mini Munch cucumbers, one onion and one red onion, which is on the small side, and two shallots.

Purple Cascade French beans and St.George runner beans.

Arran Pilot and Anya potatoes.

My mum and dad may not be able to grow their own any more but they don't miss out on that home grown taste.

    1. I'm not keen on Crystal Lemon at all, I've only grown them this year for my dad as he really enjoyed them last year. My mum's now developed a taste for them too so it looks like they'll be on the growing list each year now.

  2. What a fab veg box! I bet your parents were pleased to receive it. I used to give lots of stuff to one of our daughters who lives not far from us, but she and her family have inherited the gardening bug from me and they now grow so much of their own stuff that they don't need / want mine! I suppose that is a good result though.

    1. It's nice when I can get a bit of variety in the box for them, though it's really the spuds, tomatoes and strawberries which they're very fond of. It's a great result that your daughter and her family have caught the gardening bug, it also means that you have someone to share your hobby with.

    1. They're really pleased to have some home grown veg, I think they miss it now that they don't have their own garden. I've picked more blueberries since, I think blueberry pancakes are on the menu this weekend.

  4. We often have excess veg when growing our own don't we and that's a win win. I rather like the sound of blueberry pancakes too.

    1. It's a shame they don't like courgettes, I could fill a box for them if they did. I promised Eleanor that we'd have blueberry pancakes when the blueberries were ripe and she's holding me to it.

    1. My runner beans are doing really well. We've eaten some, given some to my mum and dad and frozen some. There'll be more to pick on our next visit too. The French beans aren't doing as well though, the slugs managed to get most of them, except for the purple ones.

    1. They do say that you should have lots of different colours on your plate so my mum and dad will be ok with this lot. I think home grown veg must be so much more healthy that anything you can buy.

    1. My dad grew up eating home grown veg, his parents had an allotment too so he appreciates anything home grown. I think once you taste home grown veggies, you can taste the difference from shop bought.

  11. What an attractive looking veg Box Jo. Your parents must have been most pleased to be the recipients of such a gift. Gardening must be in the genes if they used to grow their own fruit and veg. Have either of your children inherited your green fingers or have they still to find them?

    1. I'm afraid Eleanor's fingers are chocolate coloured and Daniel's are rarely awake before evening. They were quite enthusiastic when I first took on the allotment but that soon waned. Daniel's been happy enough to take things back to uni with him though so his enthusiasm may return when he gets a place of his own.

I know I always treat home grown things with more respect than supermarket ones. And it all looks very healthy and blemish free. Green fingers indeed!

    1. I like to get as much variety packed in as I can. It's ok at this time of year when lots of things are producing but the box might only contain potatoes at the start of the year. My mum and dad still appreciate it though.

    1. It would be nice if the beans would keep their colour when they're cooked, instead they revert to a dark green, but the water they're cooked in goes a very muddy colour.

  16. What a wonderful veg box, so colourful. I only have one ripe tomato so far! It's good to see your parents enjoying home grown, you just can't beat the taste, so much better than supermarket produce. I do like the yellow cucumbers, even though I don't eat them I love to grow them.xxx

    1. It's nice to be harvesting such colourful things at the moment, it makes for a very nice looking veg box. It's only my bush variety tomatoes which are ripening at the moment, the rest are a way behind. I'm not keen on the taste of Crystal Lemon cucumbers, there's so many seeds in them but my mum and dad enjoy them so it's worth growing a couple of plants just for them.

    1. I'm really pleased with the produce we're able to supply my mum and dad with this year. I have two plants of each variety of cucumber, one of each is grown in the greenhouse and one of each outdoors. They each perform about the same.
