Meet Mavis

I have lots of quirky things in my garden. I don't think they'd count as classy but I don't care, I like my garden to be a fun place to be. You may or may not know that I have a thing about pigs, I love them, so when I saw this little pink porker in a shop in Mevagissey while we were in Cornwall this year, I knew she had to come home with us. She was a bit dirty, as all pigs are, but because of this, her price had been reduced by half, result. It didn't matter to me, she was going to be stood outside in all weathers and she would have got dirty anyway. I won't tell you what Archie uses her for, that's better left unsaid. She stands in the middle of my lawn and makes me smile every time I look at her.

Hubby was hoping to pick up a load of manure for the allotment this weekend. The farm where we get it from is currently up for sale so I don't know how long we'll have our source for, so we really need to make the most of it while we can. We're getting a new car soon too, so we want to transport it in the boot of the car we've got at the moment rather than wait until the new car is here. It's well rotted so it doesn't stink the car out. Unfortunately, we're at the time of year where family matters are taking precedence over the garden and allotment so he didn't manage to get to the farm, though he's hoping to make a trip next weekend.

The weather looks set to stay mild this week, actually warming up on Wednesday and Thursday here. The leaves are still clinging to the trees too. It can't be long now until the really cold weather arrives, after all, we're only just over four weeks away from Christmas now.

  1. Now that is the sort of livestock that you can cope with in the garden!! x

    1. Very true. She doesn't take any looking after at all.

  2. Cute 'piggy'. Although she stood outside in all weather, she wouldn't get fever. Always show you her funny face, and make you smile.

  3. Warming up? Oh that is good news. Mavis is beautiful - I hope you're going to decorate her for christmas... a spot of tinsel would look a treat.

    1. It really hasn't got very cold yet this year at all. I'm sure I can find a bit of old tinsel with which to decorate Mavis, it won't be coming back in the house though, not after what Archie will do on it.

  4. She looks lovely, I like looking at the plastic animals you can buy in the garden centre, just for brightening up the place.

    1. I've got a few stone animals dotted around the border. This little piggy is made from wood. They're not to everyone's taste, I know, though I don't have any gnomes, yet.

    1. Archie's a little boy dog, he doesn't mind where he cocks his leg. I thought we'd have had some much colder weather by now, but I'm not complaining.

  6. You should get some mossy growth on your pig if Archie is doing what I think.

I used to have a thing about hedgehogs and when I was teaching I often had something hedgehoggy bought as a goodbye present. One year my class put on a review where they did sketches depicting each of the teachers ( I had editorial rights). My character was called Mrs Tiggywinkle

    1. Ha ha, we'll see if that happens. I think kids latch on to teacher's likes and dislikes. I remember one of the teachers at the kid's primary school liking frogs, I think she was inundated with froggy gifts at the end of term. How lovely that you were Mrs Tiggywinkle, that's a term of endearment.

  7. Your much-loved pig on your lawn is a lot of fun. We have some garden ornaments that belonged to the lady
who lived in our house, a rabbit, two gnomes and a fairy bird path. It reminds me of the lady (whose now in a nursing home) and I'm quite sentimental about them
even though I wouldn't have thought of choosing them if I'd seen them in a garden centre.

    1. It sounds as though those ornaments belong with the house and I can see why they mean so much to you. It's lovely that you've kept them, the lady who lived in your house obviously loved them herself.

    1. I don't think it would be too much to ask but alas, she's a lazy swine.

  10. Hope that Mavis has enjoyed the move and is settling down in her new des res. She certainly looks very much in the pink. Shame about the farm Jo but maybe the business will continue under new management and there will still be a source of manure.

    1. There's quite a few farms nearby and I know of at least one other souce which I think will allow us to take some manure off their hands so I don't think we'll be left without.

  12. Mavis is wonderful! I have quite the obsession with pigs, and longing waiting for the day I can finally buy a farm and have some real ones (who needs dogs when you can be odd and want pigs instead?) I better not show hubby this post, or he'll never let me get a real one :P

    1. I don't think I'll ever get a real pig, but I love visiting them at farms, they're such entertaining animals.

  13. Hi Mavis! So you and Archie are not the best of friends??? Or is it the opposite?

    1. Archie's taken a liking to Mavis, even if it is just to cock his leg against.

  14. Now that's a very nice pig! Hope you get your manure soon. I need some too, the allotments used to get it delivered but I don't think they do any more. You're right, winter is definitely on it's way now. I hope you have a good week Jo.

    1. I envy those people who are on sites where they get manure and wood chip deliveries, it would make life so much easier. It's been a decent week so far weather wise, I'm surprised we haven't had any colder weather yet.

  15. Sadly, with a community garden, if I left lovely things outside they'd be gone in a heartbeat! Mavis is a wonderful enhancement for your lawn, even if Archie shows his appreciation in the only way he knows! Always a shame when a local resource shuts up shop; we lost our London Green Waste compost a few years back but it reappeared this summer in bags (at a price!). Hope you have similar luck with acquiring some muck for your allotment!

    1. It's the same with allotments, I'd love to pretty mine up a bit but I'm sure anything I left there would soon disappear. It's always the same when there's a quick buck to be made, they've obviously seen how popular it was and are now cashing in.

    1. Well, they have to have somewhere to do it, I suppose. I don't know what it is about pigs, I just love them.
