Bulbs Potted Up

Every year, I say that I'm going to plant some bulbs. Many years I actually buy some bulbs, but most years I never get round to planting them. This year is an exception. I bought some bulbs on Saturday, and forced myself to get them planted up the minute I got home, otherwise they'd probably still be in their packets waiting to be put in some soil now. I saw the crocus Cream Beauty on many blogs last year and fell in love with their buttery yellow colour, so they were the first bulbs I picked up. I love iris's, and Reticulata are a miniature or dwarf type which I've wanted to grow for a number of years, so they were a must. The daffodil variety I chose is Carlton. There's so many different daffodils on the market, but I don't think you can beat a simple yellow variety. I had been looking for tulips too, but there weren't any which really took my fancy so I shall have a look for some elsewhere. We popped in to a local farm shop on the way home and they were selling 1kg nets of daffodils for £1.39. There was no variety stated, just yellow, but at that price I couldn't resist. There were twenty nine bulbs in the net. I've planted all the bulbs in containers so that I can move them near the house and enjoy their blooms in spring once they flower.

I had intended to go to the allotment yesterday, but other commitments prevailed. There's still lots of ground waiting to be dug over, and I really want to get it done before winter so that the frosts will break the soil down. I need to make an effort to get down there as soon as possible to get it done.

It was a lovely morning when I took Archie for his walk. I'm glad I took him first thing as it's raining now, though it's considerably warmer today than it was at the beginning of last week. I hope we're not in for a dull, wet week.

  1. I am not one for bulbs in the garden...I always forget they're there and dig them up. Never thought about putting them in containers before but now you have got my mind ticking!!!

I still have plenty of land to dig...and the garlic still to plant but it's raining here too.

    1. I have a few bulbs in the garden but whenever I do get round to planting any, it's usually in to containers. It's nice to have them near the door so that they can be enjoyed by everyone coming and going. It's always a rush at this time of year trying to get everything done in between rain.

  2. The previous owner to our home must of had shares in bulb companies, every inch of garden had them. I have a few left but they always grow in the wrong place and very few or no flowers appear so when they come up I remove them.

It is difficult to get the outdoor jobs done with the rotten weather, however I have vowed that come rain or shine on Wednesday I AM going to tackle the front garden.

    Have a good week x

    1. It was the same here, bulbs popping up all over the place, but not where I wanted them so unfortunately, they had to go. I've got lots of clearing up done in the garden, but still more to do. My main aim now is the allotment, it really does need to be dug before winter sets in.

  3. Great value with your daffodils. My allotment could do with been dug over too, I'm just not getting the weather or the time.

    1. I couldn't resist the daffodils at that price, I'm sure I'll be pleased I got them come spring when they're blooming and cheering the garden up. My allotment's too wet to dig at the moment, I'm hoping for some dry days so I can get it done.

  4. I couldnt be bothered putting in any more bulbs this autumn but did put loads in other years so I am just hoping they still come up next spring. I think the weather forecast around here is quite good this week, no frost and mostly dry and mild.

    1. I have bulbs in my garden which have been there since before we moved in nineteen years ago and they still bloom every year. It was wet here yesterday, and it's the same today, no digging today.

  5. Very impressed that you've planted your bulbs, most of mine are still in packets (and I suspect there are some lurking in a drawer that I bought last year). You've spurred me on though, I'm off to get them out and make sure I plant them at the weekend!

    1. I've impressed myself, I'm not usually so good at getting them planted. You must do yours now too, we'll both be glad in spring when we've got lovely displays.

  6. If you get your plot dug this week you could pop over and do some digging for me.

    1. I'm sure yours will be done long before mine. It's far too wet to dig at the moment so that's holding me back too.

  7. Good on you Jo - you've beaten me to it with bulb planting. Your labours will be well rewarded come spring. Worth keeping an eye open on some of the online sellers of tulip bulbs - they often have sales at this time of year.

    1. I like the cream varieties. I saw a beautiful display at Harlow Carr last year which has inspired me to create something similar, and that included cream tulips.

    2. Ooops, senior moment. I was thinking you were talking about a cream coloured tulip there. They're on my mind a little as I've been having a little look online to see what's available. You mean the crocus, of course. I think your's was one of the blogs I saw them on and decided I had to have some.

  9. I love bulbs but I struggle to remember to plant them and them if I do I always forget I have and then dig them up when I 'discover' a free area in the garden.

    1. That's one of the reasons I tend to plant most of my bulbs in containers. It also means that I can move them near to the house so that I can enjoy them more too.

  10. I planted some Cream Beauty crocus recently. Today I planted yellow tulips in a container. Good luck with the digging our site is well soggy still, although thankfully I have very little to do now. Flighty xx

    1. I've wanted some Cream Beauty crocus since I saw them on blogs last year, I'm looking forward to them blooming. My allotment is just the same, very wet to say the least. I wish my digging was finished.

  11. I haven't bought any new bulbs this year. I think my favourite would be masses of white snowdrops.

    1. I don't have many snowdrops in the garden, just the odd one or two which pop up every year.

  12. I have all my bulbs potted up now too, I saved a lot from last year but mice ate them so I had to buy a whole lot of replacements, but cream beauty were amongst them. Now all we have to do it wait till they all pop up.

    1. It seems that Cream Beauty is a favourite, many of us have this variety. They'll be blooming before we know it, time seems to whizz by now.

  13. Your garden is going to look lovely come the spring with all those bulbs. Those daffs were a bargain! I'm just ordering a few more tulips and then that will be me done with bulbs. They do look gorgeous and planting them is worth it but it's not my favourite task in the garden. ;)

    1. I'm still on the look out for some tulips, and then that will be me done too. I think it's really exciting in spring when the first shoots are seen peeking out of the soil.
