Cauliflowers Fluffy And Cabbages Green

I haven't grown any cauliflowers this year, but my cabbages are lovely and green. I've never been very successful at growing cabbages, the slugs usually get them before I get chance, but it's looking very hopeful this year. They're starting to heart up now and should be ready to harvest before long. I don't seem to have had as much slug damage this year, I suppose that's one of the good things to come out of the dry weather conditions this year.

My Brussels sprouts are just beginning to produce some buds along the stem. This is another crop which I haven't been very successful with in the past, though it's too early yet to predict if I'm going to do any better this year. I always keep the soil firm around the plants but the sprouts are still never up to much. It would be nice to have home grown on my Christmas dinner plate.

We've had a lovely bright day here today but I didn't get chance to go to the allotment as I've had other commitments. I'm hoping for similar weather tomorrow so I can pop down there then.

  1. Good for you on the cabbage and brussel sprouts. I never have much luck with the cabbage either (the store stopped selling the brussel sprout plants) but I still plant it every year hoping.

  2. That looks like a great cabbage, Jo. What variety is it? My Summer cabbages were good this year, but my Red Cabbage have been poor.

  7. I only enjoy cauliflower if it is cooked until it is soggy. Actually I like all my veg to be well cooked.

  11. This will be the first time I've managed to get any home grown cabbage on my plate, Becky. I try every year but they usually get eaten by slugs.

I can't remember which variety it is, Mark. I'm kicking myself as I'm usually so good at making notes of which variety I've sown. I haven't grown any red cabbage, perhaps something to add to the list for next year.

Glad to hear that your sprouts are doing ok, Sue. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I manage to grow some this year.

This is the first decent cabbage I've managed to grow, Tanya. I think it's all down to luck, the slugs usually get to mine before I do.

Hope you managed to get to the allotment, Lorna. We had a lovely day on Saturday but it was very grey and damp yesterday and I didn't make it to the plot.

I'm hoping that it tastes good, Anna. I didn't make it to the plot yesterday so I really need to make an effort this week.

Cauliflower isn't a favourite in our house so I don't grow it, Don't unplug your hub. I try not to overcook my veg otherwise the goodness is boiled away.

How lucky to have such generous neighbours, Flighty. It sounds like we both had grey, miserable days yesterday.

Thanks, Damo. I guess you're growing for the show bench then. I'm happy to manage a cabbage which reaches the table.

They've been netted right from the start, Elaine. I've learnt my lesson with brassicas, it's not worth growing them unless they're netted.

  12. I didn't grow ant brassicas this year with it being my first year on the plot. I'd heard they were difficult and thought I would stick to plants that were a bit easier, to ease myself in. But I'm definitely going to try some next year. Looks like I'll need to invest in some netting.

  13. You'll definitely need netting for brassicas, Wellywoman, there's always something out to get them be it pigeons, caterpillars or slugs. Unfortunately, there's not much you can do about the slugs unless you use pellets, which I haven't done so far, but I've been lucky this year, I think it's been too dry for them.
