Favourite Photo Meme

This meme has been passed on to me from Kella at Kella's Musings on Growing Her Own, Wildlife and Her Brand of Parenting. As this is a gardening blog I decided to go with a photo of myself taken with my dad at a place called Appletreewick, which is in Wharfedale in the Yorkshire Dales. As you can see, I was about four years old in the photo, taken in the early 1970's, hence the quality. This is the place where I first learnt about fauna and flora so I thought it would be apt.

As a family we often used to take day trips to the Yorkshire Dales, and this is something which I now continue with my own family. Appletreewick is little over an hour away by car from where I live, and is a lovely peaceful place to go for a picnic by the River Wharfe.

Although called the Yorkshire Dales National Park, part of it is situated in Cumbria. The scenery is fantastic and it's my favourite part of the world.

In true meme style, I must now pass this meme on to some other people so here goes:-

Please note you are under no obligation to play along.

  1. How adorable and precious. I think part of the fun of these things is the memories. I would love a chance to tour some of those big National Trust/ National park, gardens again.

  5. A lovely photo Jo. The very name Appletreewick conjures up all sorts of magical images and it sounds from what you say that it lives up to its name.

  8. This is beautiful photo. I love how the tree reflects in a lake, but I guess that for you it has much more sentimental value than just a lovely nature.

I love the English countryside, Pamela, especially the Yorkshire Dales. There is some fantastic scenery there.

I think Appletreewick is a lovely name for a village, Anna. It sounds full of mystery to me.

Thank you for the award, Kella, I will do a post about it shortly. I love looking at old photos, as you say, they are full of memories.

I love photos of water where there are reflections, Vrtlarica. My kids have spent many happy days paddling in the shallower parts of the river.

I liked the idea of this meme too, Jeanne. There were dozens of photos which I could have used but I thought this one was appropriate.

Thank you for visiting, Carrie. It took me a little longer than a day to read your blog, but I enjoyed it. I'll be visiting again soon and look forward to following you on your allotments.

That's why I like the Yorkshire Dales so much, Cat. My visits there, even now, are so stress free, it's so relaxing. I enjoyed your follow us post too.

They don't make sandals like those nowadays, Linda, and I always had to get my feet measured for them too.

  18. Hi Jo

I LOVE this photo. It makes me think of a book cover of a childhood memoir, and is very reminiscent of childhood for me too. I grew up in the wilds of the Lancashire moors, further south than the beautiful countryside you describe, but with a similar landscape. How lovely that you are still able to visit there easily.

There is something so romantic about countryside reminiscences of childhood. I sometimes regret living in an urban place so my kids don't get all that green freedom that I got every day on the walk to school. It's one of the main things we get from the allotment - that feeling of open space and nature.

Thanks for popping by. I have been out of action for a long time, as well as the obvious lack of gardening activity in winter. Well, for me anyway as I am most certainly a fair weather gardener!

  19. We live on the outskirts of Leeds, ReapWhatYouGrow, so although we're not far away from the hussle and bussle of a big city, the countryside isn't far away either. When I was growing up we had a wood at the end of our street and our house backed onto farmer's fields. Sadly, where the wood once stood there is now a housing development and office buildings and a motorway now occupies the farmer's fields. It's so disheartening to see alot of our contyrside being swallowed up. I'm sorry to hear that you've been out of action, but glad to hear that you're now on the road to recovery.
